SEATTLE – A man has been charged nearly 46 years after the killing of a 21-year-old Everett woman, authorities said.
Mitchell Gaff, a man in his 60s, was charged Friday in Snohomish County Superior Court with aggravated murder and first-degree murder in the 1980 death of Susan Vesey.

Gaff was previously arrested and booked by the Everett Police Department in May 2024 in connection with the June 2, 1984, killing of another Everett woman, Judy Weaver.
He is currently in custody in Snohomish County, authorities said.

Vesey was found dead on July 12, 1980, the morning after her 21st birthday, inside her home on Casino Road. Her husband, Ken Vesey, discovered her when he returned home from a night shift, according to authorities.
The couple’s two children – a 2-year-old daughter and an infant son – were in the home but were unharmed.
Investigators recently identified Gaff as a suspect after new DNA evidence was discovered, officials said.

“I am so proud of our Everett Police Department for solving this murder case by utilizing advancements in DNA analysis techniques,” Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin said in a statement. “Through perseverance, our team will crack the case even decades after the crime is committed. We honor Susan’s memory as we bring this suspect to justice.”
Everett Police Chief Robert Goetz said investigators remain committed to pursuing violent crime cases even decades later.“Our investigators strive to seek justice for victims of violent crime and hold offenders accountable,” Goetz said. “We appreciate Detective Susan Logothetti’s efforts, because of which this suspect can be charged almost 50 years later.”
